Intuition often feels like a quiet whisper inside us, guiding decisions and revealing truths beyond ordinary perception. Many people experience moments when they just know something without logical explanation. This inner knowing connects to what spiritual traditions call the "Clairs" — a set of spiritual senses that help us perceive energies, emotions, and information beyond the physical world. Exploring these senses can open doors to understanding your potential gifts and deepen your connection to intuition.
This article will guide you through the different Clairs, how to recognize them, and practical ways to develop your intuitive abilities. Whether you are curious about your spiritual gifts or want to strengthen your inner guidance, this post offers clear insights and examples to support your journey.
What Are the Clairs?
The term "Clairs" comes from the French word clair, meaning "clear." It refers to clear or heightened spiritual senses that go beyond the five physical senses. These senses allow people to receive information through non-ordinary ways. The most commonly recognized Clairs include:
Clairvoyance (clear seeing)
Clairaudience (clear hearing)
Clairsentience (clear feeling)
Claircognizance (clear knowing)
Clairalience (clear smelling)
Clairgustance (clear tasting)
Each Clair represents a different way your intuition or spiritual awareness can express itself. People often have a dominant Clair, but many experience a combination.
How to Recognize Your Spiritual Senses
Understanding your Clairs starts with paying attention to subtle experiences in daily life. Here are some signs that you might be tapping into one or more of these spiritual senses:
Clairvoyance: You see images, symbols, or flashes in your mind’s eye that later prove meaningful. For example, you might visualize a place or person before physically encountering them. This can also manifest in your dreams.
Clairaudience: You hear words, sounds, or messages that others do not. This could be a voice in your mind or faint sounds that guide you. Many expect this gift to be external, meaning others may hear it or it's coming from an outside source, but it usually doesn't. It will sound like it is external to you, but it isn't.
Clairsentience: You deeply feel the emotions or physical sensations of others, sometimes without explanation. This can include sensing energy shifts in a room or feeling a sudden chill. This is common for almost all people in varying strengths. Empaths identify with this clair the strongest.
Claircognizance: You have sudden insights or knowledge that seem to come from nowhere. This is a strong inner knowing without logical reasoning. This one can be tough to discern because many times it appears like it's our own thoughts so we often dismiss it as a fluke or coincidence.
Clairalience: You detect specific smells that have no physical source, often linked to memories or spiritual messages. Some people explain smelling their mother's perfume after they have passed away or a fathers cologne. It can also present as a food smell when no one is cooking or even something more specific such as the smell of rain or sea air when you aren't near the ocean. These are all small signs to tell us to pay attention or let us know a loved one or spirit guide is near.
Clairgustance: You taste something unusual or distinct without eating or drinking anything related. I've only experienced this once or twice, but like clairalience, it's another way for the other side to communicate with us.
By journaling your experiences and noting patterns, you can identify which Clairs are most active for you. Hint: Studio Reiki has blank and guided journals in our shop available for purchase. Oh, come on you didn't think I'd waste a perfectly good moment to promote a product did you?
Developing Your Intuition Through the Clairs
Once you recognize your spiritual senses, you can nurture them with simple practices:
1. Meditation and Mindfulness
Meditation quiets the mind and sharpens awareness. Try focusing on one Clair at a time during meditation. For example, visualize images for Clairvoyance or listen carefully for inner sounds for Clairaudience.
2. Keep a Journal
Write down intuitive impressions, dreams, or unusual sensory experiences. Over time, you will see connections and build confidence in your gifts. Get a great looking one in our shop!
3. Practice Grounding
Grounding techniques, like walking barefoot on grass or deep breathing, help balance your energy and make it easier to distinguish intuitive messages from everyday thoughts. There are also guided meditations online or you can sit and meditate visualizing roots coming out of your feet into the ground beneath you and sending all negative energy through those roots. After that you'll visualize the roots bringing up light energy from the earth into your body.
4. Use Divination Tools
Crystals, tarot cards, or pendulums can support your connection to intuition by providing focus and symbolic language. Some of these may take some practice and time to learn. I find doing this after meditation when my mind is most open has the best results for receiving messages. Start with one tool and work with it over a few months. Don't over think which tool works best, but pick one you feel drawn to or interested in learning. You can always try something new later.
5. Trust Your Feelings
Clairsentience often shows up as gut feelings or emotional nudges. Pay attention to these sensations and test them in real situations.
Examples of Spiritual Senses in Action
A woman with strong Clairvoyance might see a symbol in a meditation that later appears in her waking life, confirming a decision.
Someone with Clairaudience could hear a guiding phrase during a stressful moment that calms them and points to a solution.
A person with Clairsentience might enter a room and instantly feel the emotional atmosphere, helping them respond with empathy.
Claircognizance can show up as sudden clarity about a problem without prior research or analysis.
These examples show how spiritual senses provide practical guidance and enrich everyday experiences.
Common Misunderstandings About the Clairs
Many people confuse intuition with imagination or wishful thinking. The Clairs are not about fantasy but about receiving real information and signs through subtle channels. Developing these senses requires practice, patience, and discernment. Here is the key though. Seeing images in our minds eye is where our imagination also sits. It's why children are so open to receiving when they are little. We've just been taught to believe our imagination is false or fake so we no longer trust it.
Another misconception is that spiritual gifts are rare or only for certain people. In reality, everyone has some level of intuitive ability. The difference lies in awareness and willingness to explore these senses. I've seen this first hand with Reiki practitioners.
How to Use Your Gifts Responsibly
With spiritual gifts comes responsibility. Here are some tips to use your Clairs wisely:
Stay grounded to avoid confusion between intuition and fear or wishful thinking.
Respect privacy when sensing others’ emotions or information. Use your gifts to support, not invade.
Seek balance by combining intuition with practical reasoning.
Keep learning by reading, attending workshops, or connecting with experienced practitioners.
Be patient; developing spiritual senses is a gradual process.

If you feel you may have one of these gifts, are curious to learn more, or are experiencing a spiritual awakening, we invite you to connect with Studio Reiki. We offer supportive guidance, trusted resources, and thoughtful conversations to help you understand what you’re experiencing—without fear or overwhelm.
One of the most common things we hear is how isolating these experiences can feel. Not because there’s no one around, but because people aren’t sure who they can trust or talk to safely.
Much like mental health, there is still significant stigma surrounding spiritual gifts. Deeply rooted religious beliefs and fear of the unknown often lead people to deny or hide their abilities. Over time, this can create its own form of trauma. It doesn’t have to be that way. You don’t have to go through this alone. Let us help you turn it into a super power!
